PC Marketplace is closing August 2013

As part of the upcoming Xbox 360 system update, Microsoft Points will be retired, and the Xbox.com PC marketplace will be closed as of August 22, 2013. We encourage you to spend your Microsoft Points balance prior to this change. Although ...you will no longer be able to purchase any Age of Empires Online content after August 22nd, you can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading it through the Games for Windows LIVE client software even if it was purchased through Steam. More information is available here.

Does this mean that no new player can ever buy this game?

Just to confirm: We will still be able to buy content through Steam, right?

You will be able to re-download and use any content you have purchased, but you will not be able to make additional marketplace purchases after the 22nd. You will however still be able to purchase content in-game using EP.

Does this mean that after Aug 22nd the game will no longer be available for download for new players? (free to play download*steam*?) Period?  No more free download and earning in game EP to purchase content? even through steam?

My reading is that this doesn't affect existing AoEO players at all - or have I missed something?

@Jeinx - sadly correct, no new players will be able to join the game after the marketplace closes.

@Brawny - existing players should be relatively unaffected, with the exception of the ability to purchase EP.

This is not good news. At all.

Better get moving on some of that English server consolidation.

And even that might not be enough into the future...

This game's requirement of a product key from GFWL's marketplace was one of the major obstacles that turned away many players / or "potential customers" from trying this game out. If GFWL marketplace closes, how will product keys be generated. This is going to affect AOEO significantly. What will be the fate of AOEO then? Is the game going to terminate at the end of 2013? Without any developer support and a gradual decline in player population, is the fate of AOEO inevitable?  Is it possible to hire a programmer or developer to work around the AOEO product key part of the installation step - seek a possible alternative solution? This announcement sucks.

Never, ever let anyone tell you it can’t be done.

Re: PC Marketplace is closing August 2013

This runs far deeper than anyone really understands right now. This is far worse than the January announcement. This is it.

My buddy Crayon and I did think of some positves for uplifting rejuvenation as I am sure most people will need when they realize the extent of this.

    1) All of the people looking to for a quest partner will no longer have to list *NO NOOBS* beside their search request.

    2) Players that never really respected new players or understood their importance will get a massive education (free of charge) on why they are so essential.

    3) Getting to know all of the players that play the game will get easier and easier every day. every week..

    4) All of the pro PVP players will be able to use standard mode in Sparta because they will all have the same gear.

    5) Eventually everyone that still plays will be Pro's

    6) We still have the new forums to look forward to.

The only thing we can hope is there is something up someone's sleeve for the next installment of AOE. I am not going to hold my breath personally.. but you never know.

Its been Real.. Thanks for the good times

    JEINX
